Our French courses, from A1 to C1

Want to learn or improve your French? Here you’ll find all our group courses, organized from beginner level (A1) to advanced level (C1), according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Not sure of your level? Take our free level test before choosing a course, so you don’t end up in a session that’s too easy or too hard.

Levels at a glance:

  • A1 – Beginner: you are learning French for the first time or want to learn the fundaments.
  • A2 – Elementary: you know the basics and can communicate in simple everyday situations.
  • B1 – Intermediate: you can hold a conversation on familiar topics and express your opinion.
  • B2 – Upper intermediate: you express yourself fluently on a range of topics, including abstract ones.
  • C1 – Advanced: you have precise, nuanced command of French, both spoken and written.

 

Each level is generally split into two or three sessions (e.g., A1.1 and A1.2), taken in order over the year.

For the best learning experience, our courses are taught entirely in French. Our teachers are native French speakers. Note that not all teachers speak Dutch (but all speak English).

Two semesters per year.

  • Most courses take place at Pieterskerkhof 5, Utrecht (note: stairs are required to reach the classrooms).
  • If enrollment is too high, classes may be held at the Stedelijk Gymnasium.

 

We adjust course prices to better reward our teachers and account for inflation.

All standard courses require purchasing a textbook and accompanying workbook (not included in the course price).

About the library

Boekhandel Bijleveld is an independent bookshop located at Janskerkhof 7, in the heart of Utrecht’s historic city centre, since 1865. The shop offers a wide selection of Dutch and English fiction, as well as a small section of French and German literature. It also has an interest in history, philosophy, current affairs, nature and science, art, literature about literature, poetry, and the best children’s books.
