History of the Alliance Française

The Alliance Française (founded in 1883), headquartered in Paris, is a worldwide nonprofit organization. It aims to promote and spread the French language and culture, as well as French-speaking cultures.

There are 31 independent Alliances in the Netherlands with about 7,000 students studying French at all levels, guided by French-speaking teachers.

The Alliances in the Netherlands are affiliated with the federation Alliance Française des Pays-Bas (AFPB), founded in 1888. The national activities can be found here.

The Alliance-Française Utrecht (AFU), founded in 1894, celebrated its 130th anniversary on November 14, 2024. On June 23, 2023, His Excellency Mr. François Alabrune Ambassador of France to the Kingdom of the Netherlands inaugurated our new offices in the heart of Utrecht.
